Summer 2009

In our mission’s endeavor to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged, “at-risk” youth, New Hope offers a mindful learning and growing experience during the summer.   Below is a list of highlights from our “Hope for Youth” Summer Program:

§         South Florida Science Museum - Our youth learn about chemical “concoctions” with the museum staff who visit our education center.

§         Unique Science Projects – Our staff participate with our youth in unique science projects and learn about radio waves, coloring carnations, effects of sunlight on plants, and balloon power.

§         Project Grow - Twenty-two students are currently involved in Project Grow, offered by the Center for Creative Education of West Palm Beach, FL.  Project Grow teaches young people what being healthy means by learning how to grow a personal vegetable garden beginning with “seeds in a cup” and transferring them outside at our center in Pahokee. This project also includes learning about making healthy choices by sampling and tasting different delicious fruits and vegetables.  A third activity associated with Project Grow is learning how to relax and balance your lifestyle through yoga and mind movement.

§         Palm Beach Zoo – Educational associates from the zoo visit our center and teach our youth about the different animals, their habitats and adaptations; including the difference between a turtle and a tortoise, how the North American geckoes differ from the Egyptian geckoes, and everything you wanted to know about the milk snake, but were afraid to ask!

§         Solid Waste Authority – Our youth participate in the “Going Green Program” where they take a tour of the West Palm Beach Solid Waste Authority and learn about recycling.

§         Palm Beach Fishing Foundation – Our youth learn about the ocean and its “fishy” inhabitants when they board the “Lady K” drift boat for an educational and fun fishing trip.
